Spelling and "Anglicization" - Many of the words here aren't the way they would look to a local. Many desert areas are inhabited or at least frequented by people to whom english is not the native tongue. Nor is the modern english alphabet even remotely familiar. (More on that in "Zen Heart - Coyote Heart") The strange-sounding agglomerations of unfamiliar syllables are a compromise between the original foreign word or phrase, and the alphabet with which we - most of us - are so familiar. Thus, as with the case of former Russian rulers, we have both "Tsar" and "Czar". Neither is more right than the other - the original word coming from the Cyrillic alphabet, and is itself a derivation of the Latin "Caesar". In some cases, as you will see if you go further, more than one local people might have slightly different or even completely different names for the same thing. Also, as is likely the case, I'm going to miss something. Feel free to point it out - we all have something to learn.
A word about the pictures in the document: All space images are courtesy of NASA JPL, through a variety of space-borne platforms. All other photos are my own, or are mined from private web sites and are used by permission. In some cases, the pictures apparently come from unmaintained web sites, and thus permission is yet to be forthcoming. But I am making every effort to obtain that permission, and I would remind all of you users that permission should be obtained if you plan on using any of these pictures for other than educational use. Enjoy!
